The Beas River is a significant waterway in northern India, originating from Beas Kund near Rohtang Pass in the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas. Flowing for approximately 470 km, it passes through Himachal Pradesh and Punjab before merging with the Sutlej River at Harike. The river has historical importance, as Alexander the Great's army halted at its banks in 326 BCE. It plays a crucial role in irrigation, hydropower generation, and biodiversity conservation, with key projects like the Pandoh Dam and Pong Dam supporting agriculture and electricity production. The Beas River Valley, particularly in Kullu and Manali, is a major tourist attraction known for its breathtaking landscapes and adventure activities. Rich in ecological diversity, the river also sustains various aquatic species, including the Indus River dolphin in its lower reaches.
